Deck Stair Restoration in Ozark, MO
Restored deck stairs with durable exterior finish in Ozark, Missouri

What initially appeared to be a simple paint failure turned out to be a moisture-related problem affecting the deck stairs. The homeowner was concerned about peeling paint, particularly on several stair boards where the coating was separating from the wood in long strips.

During our inspection, we determined that the existing paint had likely been applied while the moisture content of the lumber was still too high. As moisture continued to escape from the wood over time, it pushed against the coating and caused widespread paint failure.
Rather than simply scraping the visibly damaged areas and repainting, we chose to address the root cause of the problem. Each stair tread was removed individually, allowing all failing paint to be stripped away and every surface to be properly prepared. The wood was then sanded to create a clean and consistent substrate for the new finish.
Throughout the restoration process, moisture levels were periodically monitored using a moisture meter to ensure the wood had reached an appropriate moisture content before repainting. Once conditions were suitable, two generous coats of exterior paint were applied to provide long-lasting protection and a uniform appearance.

To further improve safety, non-slip tread tape was installed on each stair, providing additional traction during wet weather and everyday use.
The completed project not only restored the appearance of the staircase but also addressed the underlying cause of the paint failure, helping to improve both durability and safety for years to come.
